Chita Rivera began training as a ballerina at age 11, and shortly thereafter won a scholarship from George Balanchie where she took class with the likes of Edward Villella and Melissa Hayden. Soon after that ballet lost and Broadway gained the 17-year-old. Her rich and varied Broadway career is highlighted by starring performance in West Side Story, Bye Bye Birdie, Chicago and The Rink ( for which she won both the Drama Desk and Tony Award ) and Jerry's Girls. She achieved stardom in London in the original 1957 production of West Side Story and returned to the West End in 1960 as Rosie in the hit show Bye Bye Birdie at Her Majesty's Theatre. She has since returned on several occasions to perform her nightclub act to the famous London Palladium, as well as to sing and dance in a tribute to Broadway composer Jerry Herman.Chita has performed across the United States in Call Me Madame, Threepenny Opera, Sweet Charity, Kiss Me Kate and Zorba. In 1988 she did a national tour of Can-Can with the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. Her club act and concerts play to outstanding reviews. Her most treasured production is her daughter Lisa Mordente.
